Fear: A Gone Novel by Michael Grant

*Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t read the first four books: Gone, Hunger, Lies, and Plague there are unescapable mentions of BIG happenings!

Character Statuses:

Fear by Michael Grant is #5 in the Gone series. I especially love the beginning of this book. You get to see a whole new side of Astrid. Instead of being the “needy girlfriend”, she’s “rough-and-tough” and living on her own in the woods, constantly torturing herself about the murder of her five-year-old brother, Little Pete, which was intended as a way to end the FAYZ. She is also wondering about Sam. What is he doing? Does he miss me? Has he moved on? But Astrid isn’t the only one who has changed. And speaking of Sam, he’s living the life. (Except for desperately missing and wanting Astrid.) At the Lake Sam, Brianna, Dekka, Edilio, and others are completely cared for and at peace for once in the FAYZ. And Sam is getting bored. Another surprise in the last book is that Diana, Caine’s had-been lover is also with Sam and the crew. And with her is Caine’s child. Yes, Diana is pregnant. At Perdido Beach, “King Caine” as he named himself, is in charge. Quinn and Albert both stayed with Caine at Perdido Beach: Quinn being the head fisherman and supplying the main food source for all of the FAYZ and Albert being the businessman he is, controlling the money. 

Problems/Conflicts:

Yet another problem has appeared in the FAYZ, but this time is not some horrific creature or sickness. This time, it comes in a something called the Stain. The Stain is just what it sounds like; a stain on the FAYZ wall. And the Stain is rising, and fast, which could lead to Sam’s worst fear: Darkness. If that happened, Sam wouldn’t know what to do. Also, you can’t run at the highest speeds in the dark! So Brianna, or “the Breeze” could be effected by this matter, too.

One more main problem. Again, it has to do with the Gaiaphage and the Drake/Brittney creature. Lana can hear it. Caine can hear it. All who have been touched by the Gaiaphage can hear it. The Gaiaphage needs to be born. And who happens to be conveniently carrying a baby? Mhm, that’s right: Diana. Because of this, Drake/Brittney is trying desperately to get to Diana.

This is book #5, the one before the last book of the series, which is coming out in 2013, sadly. 😦 On the bright side, this is NOT the last book of the series! We still have one more amazing read! 🙂

Sneak Peaks, not Spoilers: 

• • One of the main characters turns out to be gay, and I’ll go ahead and let you know, it’s NOT SAM! (Sigh of relief!)
  • The Breeze has a major let down moment and helps out the Gaiaphage without meaning to.
  • Someone gets back at Caine by putting his hands in a block of cement, just like he and Drake did to her and others.

Plague: A Gone Novel by Michael Grant

They’ve survived the starvation and the hunger. They’ve survived the backstabbing and the lies. But now another challenge faces them: plague. For a short while, there has been peace in the FAYZ. But soon Dahra Baidoo’s hospital is filling up with sick, coughing children. This isn’t like any other cough. It’s something not even Lana “The Healer” can heal. This is where kids are hacking up their own insides. Yeah, gross. And deadly. And sadly, that’s not the only thing wrong. As Sam discovers on Hunter “the hunter”, there are also little devious bugs eating people from the inside out. Yeah, that’s gross too. With their reflective little shells, these bugs can’t be burnt by Sam’s glowing green fire. They can only be crushed. With really big rocks. While all of this is happening, Caine and Diana are on an island that once belonged to two movie stars eating and doing whatever they want.

The Darkness, or the Gaiaphage, is back too, if it was ever truly destroyed. And it’s reaching out for one thing, its “Nemesis” as it calls it. The Gaiaphage is using its faithful (and psycho) servant,  the Drake/Brittney creature to get exactly what it wants. Nemesis is Little Pete: Astrid’s five-year-old autistic brother so powerful that he started the FAYZ without even meaning to. Nemesis could be the very thing that the Gaiaphage needs to be reborn into the creature that can overpower everything and take over the world! Yeah, very supervillan-ey. And because Gaia means Earth, and Phage means eater, Gaiaphage must mean EARTH EATER and that can’t be good.

Although it was really gross, I loved this book. With each book, there is more gross stuff and more bad stuff, like love….and a little bit of cursing, but not really anything too bad. Sometimes during this book, I wanted to throw up just because it was so descriptive. But that’s what you get when you read a horror book, I guess. MILD SPOILERS/HINTS: Someone gets pregnant! Sam gets drunk in the beginning!

If you haven’t read any of the Gone books, I highly recommend them. Also, check out my reviews of the other books before this one! They are Gone, Hunger, and Lies.

Lies: A Gone Novel by Michael Grant

Lies by Michael Grant book #3 in the Gone series. It’s been several months since all of the adults have disappeared and the bubble around Perdido Beach, California known as “the FAYZ” has appeared. All in one night, Zil and the Human Crew set fire to Perdido Beach. A girl who was once dead is rumoured to have been seen walking along the streets. Drake, the horrible psycho “Whip Hand” is back from the dead not to kill, but torture the people he despises most with his tentacle-ish whip-hand. And among the list of people he despises is Sam, the person who fears him most. And this time, Drake cannot be killed. Immortal. Orsay, the Prophetess claims that there is a way to get out of the FAYZ besides the big poof: Death. As Sam and Astrid grow farther and farther apart and in this book you will not be able to stand Astrid! I have to admit, she gets really annoying. Together, the team of Sam, Brianna “The Breeze”, Dekka, and Edilio try to stop most of the big problems in the FAYZ! Oh, and here’s a sneak peek: Cannibalism! Yeah, gross and very desperate! But I won’t tell you who!

This whole book series is awesome. The first two books are Gone and Hunger. As far as I recall, there isn’t really any serious bad stuff in this book aside from a few curse words. The Gone series is definetely for some Stephen King fans and lovers of horror books! The story is awesome and the characters totally make the story what it is.
